When it comes to moss removal in Fordwich — reputedly Britain’s smallest town, on the Great Stour — and with housing that is largely medieval, Georgian and Victorian listed buildings, careful hand removal on fragile clay peg and slate to avoid damage is the typical call.
We keep it honest — soft-wash the moss off by hand and brush, clear the gutters and valleys, and apply biocide to slow regrowth — never pressure-washing, with soft-wash and biocide, never pressure-washing which damages tiles — a free Fordwich survey, a fixed written quote and no call-out fee.
Most Fordwich roofs are reached from a tower or roof ladder; scaffold is quoted where a job needs safe standing time at height. Scaffold is specified for: re-roofs, chimney and valley work, and anything beyond a day at height - always itemised in your written quote, never a hidden extra, and we arrange it.
Fordwich’s listed and conservation buildings mean matched materials, lime mortar and often consent, with tight lanes where scaffold and skip placement take planning. Pavement scaffold and skip permits go through Canterbury City Council; allow a few working days on streets like Fordwich high street, Fordwich’s older terraces where space is tight.
Fordwich is a historic Stour town, and its housing tells the story: Britain's smallest town by charter — timber-framed and Georgian buildings around the old town hall, peg-tiled cottages, and a tightly protected conservation area. That mix directly shapes the moss removal and roof cleaning work we do here. Moss is a real problem in Fordwich, lifting and cracking tiles and washing into gutters. We scrape, soft-treat with biocide, and clear the drainage rather than power-washing tiles to death.
An exceptionally protected historic core beside the Stour means conservation-led work throughout: reclaimed Kentish peg tile, lime mortar, and lead, with consent for any change. Riverside damp accelerates moss. That factor drives most of the moss removal and roof cleaning calls we take around King Street, Church Street, Well Lane, Water Lane and the rest of Fordwich. Protected historic town — reclaimed peg tile, lime mortar and consent required.
